Match Report. Thanks to Dave Malone
1st Half (0-4)AFCS U12 could not have had a tougher cup fixture than to meet last year’s finalists & past Colchester & District Youth League winners (4 seasons) in the first round.
Two key players missing through injury & other commitments, a slightly re-shuffled squad in deeper formation started the game with some trepidation, however, confidence grew in the form of some excellent goalkeeping from both squad keepers, *Warwick Smith & *Max Horkan (*Joint Managers `Man of The Match` Nomination) who made some superb saves throughout, only exceptional strikes reaching the back of the net.
Aware of Stanway Rovers (Blues) pedigree, AFCS U12 gave tremendous effort throughout the game, trying to contain the quality football played and occasionally put the homeside on the backfoot, only for the final pass or shot not to reach its marker.
An early defensive lapse, AFCS temporarily watching as Stanways strikers combined to hit the initial goal from just inside the box (1-0).
The level of competitiveness was indicated by Liam O, Mara injury suffered just before half time with suspected fractured wrist (confirmed).
In the final minutes of the latter part of the first half Sudbury conceded 3 further goals
(4-0)
2nd Half (1-

Stanways Capt. broke the deadlock in the second half scoring a great individual goal
(5-0).
From a goal kick clearance the referee managed to block the ball, which fell to a Stanway forward who collected to push their lead further (6-0).
A George Brett, Freekick chip found Bob Addisson up front to lob the keeper and score Sudbury’s first (6-1).
Tom Irwin performed well throughout making numerous crucial tackles and blocks with one particular goal line clearance!
Craig & Malone in centre midfield were dynamos throughout with fitness levels pushed to the limit - Tremendous effort!
Marshall had a good performance in the second half particularly, linking well with Parrett on the left.
In defence, Dodd & Heywood gave their all to keep Stanways quick forwards at bay.
In a quick counter attack, the homeside were awarded a contentious penalty, of which, further extended their lead (7-1).
Tired and bruised AFCS finally conceded the last goal to lose their first cup competition game 09/10 season (8-1).
Full respect to all Sudbury players involved for their efforts right up to the final whistle and good luck to Stanway Rovers (Blues) in the next round.
